“Grandad Carried This“. That’s the philosophy behind this bag. The MAD-13 is made to look, feel and serve like the time-honoured infantry bags of the early 20th century. It’s made to be tough and practical and the choice of materials is very deliberate. In WW1 and WW2, waxed cotton canvas, leather and old metals were the extent of military tech when it came to packs and protective gear. Velcro and plastic buckles and clips weren’t available. Sensible design and traditional hardware were deployed on the front lines to keep soldiers gear secure and dry. Your MAD-13 will look like a veteran too once it’s been worn in. Keep the canvas waxed and the leather soft as the brass seasons to brown patina.Â
BATTLE TESTED FEATURES
The MAD-13 is a medium-sized roll-top backpack. The term roll-top refers to the fact that the top of the bag is rolled (or folded) closed in order to make a tight, water-resistant seal. Regular backpacks have a folding flap that covers the main compartment. The main material is beeswaxed cotton canvas with a 16oz weight. That’s probably the heaviest you will find anywhere in the world. Waxed cotton resists water whilst still allowing the interior of the bag to breathe.
The MAD-13 is suited to motorcycle commuters and day travellers who are looking for a rugged design that exudes confidence. With an extra-wide shoulder harness it suits a variety of wearers it’s neither too big nor too small. The full-length top zipper means that in a pinch, you can fill the main compartment right to the top.Â
There are only two vertical corners to the MAD-13. These are on the back. The main compartment is a single tube that wraps the pack making it more durable and water-resistant.Â

- We use 16oz heavy beeswaxed cotton canvas that can be re-waxed using Granddad Jack’s Sack Wax to maintain water repellency and fabric durability. It’s old fashioned and it works!
